Hoy aprenderemos el género del sustantivo en español.

In Spanish, all nouns are either masculine or feminine and singular or plural.

But, how do you know the gender of a noun?

If you want to be sure, you have to learn them by heart.

Fortunately, there are a few general rules you can follow to determine if a noun is feminine or masculine.

Not everything associated with a male is masculine and everything associated with a woman is feminine.

Most nouns ending in "o" are masculine.

Most nouns ending in "a" are feminine

Exceptions: Some nouns that end in "a" are masculine and some nouns that end in "o" are feminine.

Nouns ending in -ión -tad - dad -ud and -umbre are usually feminine

Many nouns ending in -ma are masculine

Nouns denoting animals:

The feminine of animal's nouns if formed by changing "o" to "a"

In other cases the feminine of animal's noun gender uses a completely different word.

Some noun genders are fixed and don't change. They refer both genders by the same word.

Nouns denoting people:

To make a noun feminine we usually change "o" to "a"

To make a noun feminine we usually change "e" to "a"

When a masculine noun ends in consonant, the feminine is formed by adding "a" after the final consonant.

In other cases, the feminine uses a completely different word.

Some nouns that refer to professions have the same form for masculine and feminine
