In this lesson you will learn how to conjugate Spanish Regular Verbs in the present tense.

All Spanish verbs are either “regular” or “irregular.” Many Spanish verbs are completely regular, meaning that they follow a specific pattern of conjugation.

In Spanish, there are three categories of verbs. The category is determined by the last two letters of the infinitive:

The infinitive is the base form of the verb, such as to speak, to eat, to live, etc. In Spanish, all infinitives end in -ar, -er, or -ir.

In Spanish, you conjugate verbs by dropping the infinitive ending (AR,ER,IR) and adding a specific ending for each person to the stem of the verb.

In this lesson, we will use three model verbs: hablar (to speak), comer (to eat), and vivir (to live). 

If the subject is I (yo), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -o.

If the subject is you – informal (tú), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -as.

If the subject is he (él), she (ella) or you – formal (usted), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -a.

If the subject is we (nosotros/nosotras), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -amos.

If the subject is they (ellos/ellas) or you-all – (ustedes), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -an.

If the subject is I (yo), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -o.

If the subject is you – informal (tú), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -es.

If the subject is he (él), she (ella) or you – formal (usted), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -e.

If the subject is we (nosotros/nosotras), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -emos.

If the subject is they (ellos/ellas) or you-all – (ustedes), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -en.

If the subject is I (yo), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -o.

If the subject is you – informal (tú), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -es.

If the subject is he (él), she (ella) or you – formal (usted), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -e.

If the subject is we (nosotros/nosotras), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -imos.

If the subject is they (ellos/ellas) or you-all – (ustedes), conjugate by dropping the ending and add -en.

So, this is the chart that show us the endings for all these groups of regular Verbs.

Remember the AR Verbs represent about 80% of all the Verbs that you’re going to encounter.

Notice that the three groups of Verbs have the same endings for the first person singular form.

You can also see that the endings for ER and IR Verbs are identical, except for the first person plural form. The nosotros form.

Once you know these endings, you can figure out the conjugation for any Spanish regular verb.

Examples:

- Mis amigos hablan varios idiomas

My friends speak several languages.

- Yo como pan todos los días.

I eat bread every day.

- Mi madre vive en California.

My mother lives in California.
