Plural Nouns in Spanish
Today we are going to learn how to make Spanish nouns plural.
Just as in English, in Spanish there are nouns that name one thing (singular nouns), and nouns that name more than one thing (plural nouns)
To make a singular noun plural, all you need to do is to look at the last letter in the word. Why?
Because, Spanish singular to plural are formed by adding specific ends to the nouns.
So, in this lesson you will find the basic rules for making nouns plural in Spanish.
If the word ends in a vowel (a,e,i,o,u), just add the letter "s" at the end of the word.
For nouns that end in these specific stressed vowels: í and ú we may add both "es" or "s"
If the word ends in a consonant we must add "es" at the end of the word to make it plural.
Words which end in a consonant and have an accent mark on the last syllable in the singular form, will drop the accent in the plural form.
Some plural words maintain the pluralization rules of the original language.
If the word ends in "z" you need to change the "z" for "ces"
Some nouns are only used in the singular form
Some nouns are only used in the plural form
Some nouns have the same plural form as the singular
When the plural refers to two or more nouns of different gender, the masculine plural is used.
When there is a group os girls we call them "chicas". But if there is at least one boy in the same group we call them "niños"
Remember: when there is a group of mixed gender, that group is always referred to as masculine.
It's time to practice what you just learned.
