New Year's Eve Traditions
1. Eating 12 grapes
The tradition consists of eating a grape for each bell strike at midnight on December 31st. A wish must be made for each grape to attract good luck. According to the tradition, that leads to a year of prosperity. This is a cultural tradition to welcome the new year.

La tradición consiste en comer una uva por cada campanada a la medianoche del 31 de Diciembre. Se debe pedir un deseo por cada uva para atraer la buena suerte. Según la tradición, eso trae un año de prosperidad. Es una tradición cultural para dar la bienvenida al año nuevo.
2. Wearing yellow underwear
In many Latin American countries wearing yellow underwear on New Years' Eve is thought to bring good luck or fortune in the new year. Some even say the undies should be worn inside-out to ensure a year full of passion.
But there’s a catch “The underwear has to be given as a gift to bring luck.”
2. Usar ropa interior amarilla
En muchos países latinoamericanos se cree que usar ropa amarilla en la víspera de año nuevo trae buena suerte o fortuna para el nuevo año. Algunos incluso dicen que la ropa interior debe usarse al revés para asegurar un año lleno de pasión.

3. Eating lentils
Nothing fills the stomach - and the wallet - like a spoonful of lentils. The grain is widely used in all sort of rituals in Latin America to attain economic abundance. In this tradition, that originated in Italy, eating a spoonful of lentils when the clock strikes midnight, guarantee that the next year will be filled with riches!

Nada llena el estómago - y la billetera - como una cucharada de lentejas. Este grano es ampliamente utilizado en todo tipo de rituales en América Latina para conseguir la abundancia económica. En esta tradición, que se originó en Italia, comer una cucharada de lentejas cuando el reloj marca la medianoche, ¡garantiza que el próximo año estará lleno de riquezas!
4. Walking around the block with a suitcase
Are you yearning to travel? If you are, then grab a suitcase and walk around the block at the stroke of midnight. People believe that doing so will bring travel and adventure in the coming year. There's no need to pack; an empty suitcase will do.
¿Estás deseando viajar? Si e así, coge una maleta y camina alrededor de la cuadra a medianoche. Se cree que hacerlo traerá viajes y aventuras el próximo año. No hay necesidad de empacar; una maleta vacía funcionará.
5. Burning effigies
These life sized effigies are an old latin america tradition. These “stuffed people” are called "muñecos", they are stuffed with firecrackers. Then are lit at the stroke of midnight.
These effigies represent everything bad that happened the previous year, which is why they are burned. It is a ritual of purification, to be able to start on the right foot the next year.
The Muñecos are usually made to look like well-known politicians or movie stars from the outgoing year. This is how some signify doing away with the old.
5. Quemar muñecos
Estas efigies de tamaño natural son una antigua tradición de América Latina. Estas "personas rellenas" se llaman "muñecos", están llenos de petardos. Luego se encienden a la medianoche.
Estas efigies representan todo lo malo que aconteció el año anterior, por eso se los quema. Es un ritual de purificación, para poder empezar el nuevo año con el pie derecho.
Los Muñecos generalmente se hacen parecer a políticos bien conocidos o estrellas de cine del año saliente. Así es como algunos pretenden eliminar lo viejo.
6. Holding money in hand
If you want to make it rain in the new year, than you might as well start the year off with some cash in hand. Before the clock strikes twelve put your drink down and grab some bills. Having money in your hand at midnight is meant to ensure economic prosperity in the new year.
Keep in mind that holding a $100 bill will give you better results than a $1 bill!
6. Tener dinero en la mano
Si quiere que le llueva el dinero en el año nuevo, entonces puede empezar el año con algo de efectivo en la mano. Antes de que el reloj marque las doce, baje tu bebida y tome algunos billetes. Tener dinero en la mano a medianoche tiene como objetivo asegurar la prosperidad económica en el nuevo año.
¡Tome en cuenta que tener un billete de $100 le dará mejores resultados que uno de $1!
7. Sweeping the house
If this year brought you nothing but problems, suffering, tears, etc, then it’s time to sweep it all out of your home and your life. On New Year’s Eve simply take a broom to the front door and start sweeping towards the street. This ritual should rid you of all the negativity you’ve harbored throughout the year.

Si este año no le trajo más que problemas, sufrimiento, lágrimas, etc., entonces es hora de sacarlo todo fuera de su hogar y de su vida. 8. Gold and champagne
Another ritual to bring prosperity is the toasting of gold and champagne. At the strike of 12, many Latinos toast with a glass filled with champagne and a golden object placed inside. The object can be a ring, chain, or any other small object made of gold.

Otro ritual para traer prosperidad es el brindis de oro y champán. Al golpe de las 12, muchos latinos brindan con una copa de champán y un objeto de oro dentro. El objeto puede ser un anillo, cadena o cualquier otro objeto pequeño hecho de oro.
9. Burn the negative
Before midnight, take some time to write everything you’d like to forget from this year and then simply burn it up. Once you’ve left the past in ashes you’ll be ready to take on the new year.

Antes de la medianoche, tómate un tiempo para escribir todo lo que te gustaría olvidar de este año y luego simplemente quémalo. Una vez que hayas dejado el pasado en cenizas estarás listo para asumir el nuevo año.
10. Throwing water out the window
In this New Year’s Eve ritual, water symbolizes all of the suffering and tears you’d like to get rid off before the start of the new year. So, If you want to get out of your life all the negativity and pain suffered, then at midnight you must throw a glass of water out of your door or window to signify renewal.
En este ritual de la víspera de Año Nuevo, el agua simboliza todo el sufrimiento y las lágrimas que le gustaría deshacerse antes del comienzo del nuevo año. Por eso, si quieres sacar de tu vida toda la negatividad y las penas sufridas, entonces a la medianoche debes tirar un vaso de agua por la puerta o la ventana para manifestar la renovación.
