The Articles in Spanish

Today we are going to learn the definite articles in Spanish. 

Hoy aprenderemos los artículos definidos en español. 

Definite articles are used to talk about specific nouns.

In Spanish, nouns are often accompanied by articles.

Spanish articles indicate:

the word's gender (masculine or feminine)

the word's number (singular or plural) 

In English the definite article is the word "the" regardless of wheter the noun it introduces is singular or plural.

But in Spanish there are four forms: el, la, los, las, depending on wheter the noun is masculine, feminine, singular or plural.

El: is used with masculine singular nouns

La: is used with feminine singular nouns

Los: is used with masculine plural nouns

Las: is used with feminine plural nouns.

Keep in mind that, in Spanish, all nouns have gender.

Spanish articles must match the gender and the number of the noun they determine.

Bottom line is that the word "the" has four different translation in Spanish: el, la, los, las. Which one to use depends entirely on the form of the noun.

Now let's see the indefinite articles:

Indefinite articles are used before nouns that are unspecified. When you use the indefinite article, you are not referring to a specific person or thing.

Un: is used with masculine singular nouns.

Una: is used with feminine singular nouns.

Unos: is used with masculine plural nouns.

Unas: is used with feminine plural nouns.

Example sentences:

   -  Hay un pájaro en el jardin.

      There is a bird in the garden

   -  Hay unos pájaros en el jardín

      There are some birds in the garden

   -  Compré una manzana

      I bought an apple

   -  Compré unas manzanas

      I bought some apples

   -  Tengo una idea

      I have an idea

   -  Comí unas galletas

      I ate a few cookies

   -  Quiero leer un libro.

      I want to read a book

   -  Tengo unos veinte dólares.

      I have about twenty dollars
